BEEKEEPING KNOWLEDGE POWERPOINT TUTORIALS

These small boutique tutorials are held in a comfortable environment, and are intense and fact filled.  Tutorials are very systematic in their progression.  There is plenty of time, as appropriate, for Q&A.  Content of tutorials is consistent with levels 3 and 4 (industry entry level beekeeper).  It is envisaged all attendees’ questions relevant to the tutorial topic to a level 4 standard will be answered by end of tutorial in approximate timeframe allocated.

These tutorials are another resource in your beekeeping educational and networking kit.

Some chose to attend each topic.  Many just pick topics they want to hone their beekeeping skills on and/or fit in with their busy lifestyles.

Respected commercial and long term hobbyist beekeepers available as referees.

Establishing & Siting An Apiary (1 Hr)

Beekeeping is an expensive and specialist hobby. Often the siting of an apiary is not conducive to hive health and production, and neighbour acceptance. This presentation includes multiple factors on apiary site consideration and includes a handout of important points to consider prior to taking up beekeeping.

Flower & Bee Relationships & The Pollination Process (2 Hrs)

Contributors to the pollination crisis are discussed in-depth, along with an understanding of the flowering process and successional floral sources for quality pollen and nectar production; required for hive health and optimum hive yield. It is important to have an understanding of weather, soil and seasonal factors affecting pollen, nectar and honeydew sources, along with plants that can contribute toxic effects to humans and honey bees.  Various handouts available.

These tutorials complement each other.  Often attended by those contemplating beekeeping as a new hobby, or those wishing to set up an apiary with location and plantings suitable for their apiary.

Honey Bee Stings & Barbs, Prevention, Protection, Anaphylaxis, Honey Bee Desensitisation Programme, Who’s Getting Stung? (1.5 Hrs)

You can’t keep honey bees without getting stung. This tutorial covers many aspects on how to minimise numerous stings occurring and action when stung. An informative presentation for those with a family member having experienced anaphylactic reaction. 15 years ago, Maggie sustained anaphylactic shock and successfully underwent the South Island honey bee venom desensitisation programme at Christchurch Hospital. In the presentation component Who’s Getting Stung?, numerous statistics obtained from ACC were released by request from Maggie under the Official Information Act. Handout on sting prevention included.

Bee Communication & Worker Tasks (2 Hr)

Presentation on physical characteristics of honey bees and development. Each pattern of bee behaviour in and outside the beehive is triggered via numerous forms of communication. Hence a healthy hive is an organised colony, and the honey bee is a genetically programmed robot.

Drifting – Causes & Effects & Controls (1 Hr)

Drifting occurs when bees become confused and disorientated and return to the wrong hive.

Swarming & Robbing – Causes & Effects & Controls (2.5 Hrs)

Swarming is when the colony splits into at least two colonies, and the new colony/ies disperse. Robbing is an aggressive foraging behaviour when honey bees in large numbers from one hive attack another bee hive to collect honey, nectar, syrup or raw sugar. Also discussed, chemical messaging (pheromones) and specific honey bee behaviour (physiology).

These tutorials complement each other, and comprehensive detail discussed in Drifting will not be discussed extensively in Swarming & Robbing. If attending only the latter tutorial, you need to be familiar with concepts of Drifting. Both tutorials cover all aspects and effects of drifting, swarming, and robbing in hobbyist and commercial environments, along with some not so widely known 100+ year old tips!

Introduction of a Mated Laying Caged Queen to a Hive (2.5 Hrs)

How, why, when to requeen, plus do’s and don’ts. I believe this topic is an important issue that many fear failure with, particularly if they don’t understand hive dynamics, often resulting with expensive failure. The aim of this talk is to try and save introduced queens, beekeeper anguish and dollars.

How to Make a Top Split Hive (1 Hr)

Several methods suitable for both commercial and hobbyist sectors to make a top split hive – how, when, and why, plus do’s and don’ts. This is a popular way of overwintering a beehive, with potential increase of hive numbers in spring.

These two tutorials complement each other.  Comprehensive detail discussed in caged queen introduction morning tutorial will not be discussed extensively in Making a Top Split.  In fairness to those attending both tutorials; if you attend only the Top Split tutorial, you need to be totally familiar with concepts of requeening with a mated laying caged queen.  Whilst top split is an advanced beekeeping practise, those attending both tuts by the end of both tutorials will understand the top split concept.

Hive Wintering Down (1 Hr)

Successful hive production for the following season, starts with good wintering down procedures.

Hive Manipulations & Feeding Leading To Honey Production (3 Hrs)

Includes hive nutrition, manipulations, expansion in brood boxes and honey supers from mid-winter through to honey production.

These two tutorials complement each other. Comprehensive detail discussed in the morning tutorial will not be discussed extensively in the afternoon tutorial. In fairness to those attending both tutorials; if you attend only the Hive Manipulations tutorial, you need to be totally familiar with concepts of Hive Wintering Down.
